Microsoft One Note logoI've been meaning to write my thoughts on OneNote for a few months now. I've been using OneNote to keep myself organized through a hectic semester at UMass Lowell, and it has been a God-send.

I'm not using all of the features of OneNote, but I will give you a quick run-down on the basics. Here's a screenshot of the OneNote interface:

OneNote is a tool which you can use to organize your information into notebooks, subjects, and individual pages. Looking at the shot above, you will see a list of the notebooks I have tabbed vertically on the left hand side. Across the top of the page are the subjects of the current notebook, and on the right hand side are the pages within the current subject. OneNote's use of notebooks, subjects and pages is very effective because we have all used the paper forms of these instruments.

How do I get stuff into my notebook? It's easy. I just highlight the information I want on a web page. Open OneNote and navigate to the notebook/section the page belongs in. Click on new page in the upper right, then Paste. The webpage will paste exactly as you saw it in your browser.

I've used OneNote for class syllabi, class notes, snippets of text when doing research for a paper, etc. It has been nice having all of my information available without having to go online and painstakingly check individual pages. The search function makes it very easy to find information later on.

There are others ways of importing information into OneNote. You can also scan documents directly into OneNote, and of course import Microsoft Office documents as well.

You can also print to OneNote. For instance, I was doing my taxes at TaxAct.com last month. At the end of the process, TaxAct offered to let me print my return. I was in a location where I didn't have a printer. I knew it would be a pain to navigate back to the page later and print, so I just printed to OneNote. I can then choose to just keep the document filed away in OneNote, or produce a paper copy later. OneNote is a major step on the way to the paperless office.

OneNote comes with Office 2007. If you are an IT student at UMass Lowell online, you can download OneNote via the MSCDE program. I highly recommend OneNote for students, and for organizing your home finances, hobbies, etc.

If you don't have/want MS Office 2007, there is a 60-day trial of OneNote at Microsoft's web site.
